Article covers company's expertise in waste heat recovery from furnace streams

BRIDGEND, Wales, October 9, 2025 – Econotherm (UK) Ltd. is featured on the cover of the Foundry Management & Technology Magazine's October issue.

The article addresses the issues that metalcasters and other manufacturers that operate melting processes are facing beyond traditional production challenges — issues such as decarbonization, safety and global competition.

Of note, the Foundry article focuses on energy efficiency, a highly engaged topic of discussion given that melting primary or secondary metal alloys is estimated to contribute more than two-thirds of total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in many operations.

Concerning Econotherm, author Scott Harris highlights innovations that are taking place in furnace design and opportunities surrounding waste heat recovery and reuse. He points to heat pipe gas-to-air pre-heaters, such as the ones developed by Econotherm, as a proven technology for capturing exhaust energy.

The article highlights two Econotherm collaborations:

  • Aisin Automotive Castings: Three gas-fired aluminum furnaces were eequipped with a heat pipe heat exchange system that were designed to recover 500 kW of waste heat from the flue-gas stream to pre-heat combustion air, reducing fuel consumption by 15%.

  • U.S. wire manufacturer: An Econotherm heat exchanger was installed on a copper melting furnace, recovering 6.56 MMBtu/hr (1,921 kW) of waste heat, and reducing fuel consumption by up to 20%.
